RECOGNIZING EVERY “GET” YOU GET

One thing a life-threatening illness teaches you is how to savor each moment. (Not that my husband ever needed that lesson.) Life slows down into these prolonged stretches of fear, hope, and endurance. You go on, simply because you can’t not. Every day, you wake up and ask yourself, “Well, what do I get today?” Then you take those small “gets,” the gifts, and enjoy them as fully as you can. That ledge, my “Not-So-Bad” nook, represented what I was grateful for during that era. The people I’d loved and who were gone, the friend I was beginning to love, and the most important partner in my life who I was “getting” to love day to day.

Having the nook in my visual sight grounded me every day during those years. The green leaves, the tiny medallion glinting in the sun, the intimate token of my dad, and my grandmother’s smile all calmed and reassured me. If I was upset, I’d wander over and study those objects, touch them, sometimes even speak to them. They reminded me of what I was grateful for and helped me to recognize the goodness in my life.
