At Pasadena City College, the faulty leaders who designed the College 1 first year experience seminar infused Reading Apprenticeship into every aspect of this three‐credit course. Faculty and staff who sign on to teach the course find themselves learning about metacognitive conversation, reader identity, norms, Reading Strategies Lists, Talking to the Text, metacognitive logs, Think Aloud, and so forth—all as part of a four‐day professional development institute.

The College 1 course was a great success as measured by student persistence, credits completed, and equity statistics, but it was a challenge for some of the teachers, especially those who were new to Reading Apprenticeship and lesson planning (in addition to all faculty, non‐teaching staff who hold a master's are invited to teach College 1).

Shelagh Rose, who is the faculty lead for College 1, raves about the difference it has made to have an early draft of the model curriculum retooled by one of the course teachers who reflected on her own experience teaching College 1 to scaffold the use of Reading Apprenticeship routines for others:

Tiffany (Ingle) took the curriculum we had started to create, but that was very messy, and turned it into this very beautiful series of lesson plans where you had the course content and then you had the metacognitive routines and some of the other discussion protocols that we’ve learned from Reading Apprenticeship very thoughtfully embedded and also scaffolded so you would not just do, say, Think Aloud once. You would be coming back to these metacognitive routines over and over again, and they’re completely explained to the instructors along with the theory behind them.
