It took time, but slowly our community began to turn around. The police force was extensively trained and became known as the strongest in the area. There was an effective crackdown on gangs and miqueros (sellers of false documents) that was evident not only visually, but also in the crime rate statistics. There was a concerted effort to improve our schools and the air quality. If people didn’t reelect me, that’d be fine because I could rest knowing I had done everything to protect them.

A couple of years later when I ran for reelection, everyone had already written my political obituary. There was no way as a Republican—especially one who worked for Governor Wilson—that I had a shot at remaining on the council. I became an easy target during the race, as the political numbers were not on my side: I was the only Republican running out of nine candidates. Huntington Park was also a city where Democrats outnumbered Republicans three to one. And yet, my community looked past party affiliations to the numbers that mattered: the crime rates were lower and the city was a safer place to live in. Not only was I reelected; I was now the mayor and the top vote-getter.

There were plenty of challenges in the seven years I served on city council. I learned that local politics could be as rewarding as they are challenging. I learned many valuable lessons that have served me until this day. Never did I think, however, that my efforts were being noticed miles away by the Republican governor of Texas.
