Understanding Your Organisation: Where to Start as a Leader

Julia Hardy and Mohammed Bham

Principal Educational Psychologists (PEPs) and Senior Educational Psychologists (SEPs) work within Local Authorities (LAs) of varying sizes and as these are public sector organisations which include education and social care services, EPSs are either placed within special educational needs and disability (SEND) services, under social care or education and skills departments. The overall reduction in funding of LAs and focus on outsourcing of services have significantly altered the way in which many EPSs now work. However, understanding your organisation remains a central concern. This is also the case for leaders of EPs who may be responsible for teams who work in the private sector. Typically, LAs are hierarchical organisations and are directed by national and local policy which frames priorities and directs decision‐making. Within this context EPS leaders need to consider how they can act effectively within their organisation.
