Chapter 8

Will sat back and watched the car glide into NBC’s studio outside Los Angeles. He didn't think Laura would invite him to see a shoot, but she made good on her promise and here he was—getting ready to experience how a big series was shot. He grinned foolishly and knew he seemed as excited as a small child on a field trip. This whole world was so new to him. Laura laughed when she saw Will stare out of the window.

“So, let me explain. Our set isn’t constructed outside, it’s in a huge building similar to this.” Laura pointed to one of the huge warehouse like buildings they passed. Will’s eyes widened. This was news to him.

“A lot of the shots are indoor, within our house or in some room. So the Art Director designs these rooms, and mind you, the detail that goes into these rooms is amazing. I’ve seen assistants debate about the type of wallpaper to use or the curtain fabrics.” She nodded when she saw Will’s surprised expression. “Yeah, every small detail is important. The production invests heavily in the show and what makes it realistic are these small elements, especially since we’re depicting something from the past.” Will listened to her intently, a whole new world opening up in front of him.

The car pulled out in front of a building and both Laura and Will got off. Will stared at the building in surprise. It was larger than it appeared from the car. They walked past the set that they were shooting in for the day. Will was stunned at the amount of equipment. There were so many different cameras, lights, and monitors. People were running around trying to get everything set up. He saw someone run with a big load of fabric and recollected his conversation about the art directors. This is serious business. I didn’t think there was so much work involved.

Laura led him to her makeup room. She opened the door and found her hairdresser and makeup artist waiting for her. They looked at her and then at Will in surprise.

“Girl, you brought a friend to work?” Alex gave her a funny stare. Laura nodded. She turned to Will.

“Will, this is Alex, my makeup artist, and Lisa, my hairdresser. Both of them make me the diva I am on screen. Guys, this is Will, an old friend. We instantly reconnected recently. So, I invited him over to see the shoot.” Alex’s eyebrow shot up. Will could practically hear his brain whirring. Laura does have a way with words. Recently reconnected indeed. It’s true and yet not true. He pursed his lips and looked around. The dressing room wasn’t as big as he imagined. There were costumes on one side and chairs in front of the mirror. There were bright lights illuminating the mirror. Will guessed that was for the benefit of the makeup artist. He turned to look at Laura and found she had disappeared.

“She’s gone to change. We’ll get her makeup and hair done while she reherses her lines for the day.
