The final hours
A few final words about preexam preparation. Don’t discuss your preparation with anyone except a study partner or the members of your study group. Nothing will bring on self-doubt and paranoia faster than finding out that you have taken a different approach to preparing for an exam than your classmates have. There’s no telling whose methods are better, and since you’re the one using this book, forget about everyone else. Trust my advice, and trust yourself.
On the eve of an exam, gather all the materials you’ll be taking into the exam room in one place. Be sure you have your exam ticket, photo identification, a watch, and a sufficient supply of pens. If the administration allows you to bring food and beverages into the exam, bring a PowerBar (or the like), a couple of rolls of Life Savers, and a bottle of water—each of which will give you a little boost when you need it most. You want to be as calm as possible on the morning of your exam, and the last thing you want to be doing is scurrying around looking for things.
Finally, and perhaps more importantly, stop studying around dinnertime the night before your exam. Acknowledge that you’ll never master all the material. Think about how far you’ve come with the doctrine and how much you’ve learned about the subject since the beginning of the semester, and then go do something fun and relaxing to take the pressure off. Take a long walk, grab a workout, or go to a movie—just don’t study. Don’t drink to excess or take anything to help you sleep, since you don’t want to be groggy in the morning. Go to bed a bit early, and try to make peace with yourself knowing that you’ve done all that you could possibly do.
