Now - Connor

THE ENERGY IS already buzzing, filling myself and the guys with a current only achievable in moments like this, where you’re about to walk out onto a stage to meet a crowd that is already losing its mind. For you.

It brings a smile to my face as I meet the eyes of my bassist, Dane. His gratitude shines through, telling me how much being here means to him. Even Rue, normally pissed at anything he can find, hasn’t found a single excuse to get angry. Ryder stands with us, running his hand over his jaw, which I’ve learned is his only tell.

Despite everything, we’ve made it here. I’d called the rehabilitation center where I’d taken Jayden, but they legally couldn’t give me an update since I’m not a relative, patient privacy and all. But tonight, I can’t let my worries over him taint this out-of-body experience, where we’ve returned to our roots and have a sold-out show.

Poison Ivy is made up of exactly what you’d expect: a stage, a generously sized bar, and a massive empty space in the middle for moshing or dancing (depending on the crowd), with a bathroom on the very other side, slick with a floor that is permanently wet from who knows what. There’s a second-floor balcony which juts out over the empty floor, allowing more room for the sweating attendees.

The walls and ceiling are painted all black, the only color being the bright green molding shaped like ivy, which climbs up and down, swirling around the entire space. It’s as if the poisoned vines came in, wrapping and squeezing, before sucking all the color out of the rest of the space.

It was the video taken here, in this venue, which set our success into motion. We owe everything to Poison Ivy—the least we can do is give them one hell of a show tonight.

A waitress walks by, eyeing my super short-shorts and laughs. I’d been right, they hardly reached the tops of my thighs, leaving me looking almost naked behind my guitar. I’d had to borrow some of Theo’s briefs (folded up and under the tiny little shorts) to make sure my favorite part didn’t make his debut tonight.

Ryder looks at my shorts. “I actually can’t believe you’re wearing those.”

I shrug. “I never back down from a bet.”

Hesitation marks his features, as he gives his jaw another rub. “Listen, I was thinking–”

Before he can get the words out, the emcee announces over the already screaming crowd, “Please welcome back to our stage Immoral Support, with special guest Ryder Cassidy!”

Glancing at the entrance to the stage, my heartbeat picks up before looking back to Ryder. “Later?”

He nods and I wrap my arm around his shoulder, and with that, I lead the guys into the lights. Though I didn’t think it was possible, the crowd manages to erupt even louder, and I can’t help the ear-splitting grin that takes over.

Dane and Rue find their usual places, as if it’s just another afternoon rehearsal, but I see the gleam in their eyes.
