Chapter Six
Mr. Ian had strung a rope around Aerieâs and Hellieâs kennels and locked them so no one would touch them. We crawled underneath the tables and looked around.
âMr. Rupert said he found Miss Rubyâs pencil beside Hellieâs kennel,â I said, âand Miss Ruby said she found ferret fur in Aerieâs kennel, but that might have been because of the wind and rain.â
âThere is a lot of trampled grass,â said Connor. âThatâs too badâwe canât look for tracks.â
âWhat about fingerprints?â asked Sophie. âWhen my babushkaâmy grandmaâand I watch mystery shows, the detectives always take fingerprints.â
âThatâs a good idea,â I said, âbut there are too many people around. Anyone could have touched the kennels.â
âBeing an investigator is much harder than it seems,â said Sophie. âWhat if I walk around the park and look for the pets?â
âThatâs a good idea,â I said.
âIâll ask around too,â she said. âMaybe someone spotted them. Oh, look! Thereâs Franklin and Kate.â
They are our other friends. I waved to them, and they waved back. âMaybe they can help,â I said. âThe more people looking, the better.â
âIâm going to start searching for the pets,â said Sophie. âGood luck, Lark Sheep and Connor Ba, not a sheep. Weâll meet back here later.â
Connor shook his head and sighed. âGood luck to you too.â
After she had left, he said, âDo you think Mr. Rupert took Aerie and then hid Hellie so he wouldnât be a suspect? Or that maybe Miss Ruby did the same thing, except she took Hellie and hid Aerie?â
âI donât know,â I said. âI hope not. Stealing pets from their families is mean. Neither Mr. Rupert nor Miss Ruby is a mean person. Hellie and Aerie probably got lost. Now theyâre scared, and theyâve missed breakfast.â
âLark and Connor!â Halmoni walked toward us with Max on the leash. âHow is it going?â
âNot so great,â I said. I bent down and scratched Maxâs ears. âBut Max looks fantastic.â
âThank you,â said Halmoni. âI thought about what Connor suggested for Maxâs costume. Putting a bow tie on Maxâs collar makes him look like a professor, and Max doesnât mind wearing his collar, so it is a good compromise.â She straightened his tie. âTell me more about the mysteries.â
Connor told her about the rain ghost, and I told her about the missing pets.
âWe looked for clues in the kennels, but we didnât see anything.â I looked at Max. âBut Max might be able to help.â I took out the blanket from Aerieâs kennel. âMax, smell this. Can you find Aerie?â
âGood thinking,â said Connor. âMax is a great tracker!â
Max sniffed the blanket, then sniffed the ground and started walking. We followed and followed, but after ten minutes Halmoni said, âI think there are too many scents for Max to follow.â
I bent down and gave him a tummy rub.
So did Connor. âYou tried your best, and you did really great, Max.â
Maxâs tail thumped in appresciastion appearciatshun appreciation.
âConnor and I thought weâd go to the library and look for some help in the books.â I stood up.
