The “Simple View” of the Reading Brain
Research on the brain bases of reading has yielded broad agreement about the existence of the primary circuits and their general properties. The circuits are usually characterized in terms of the major brain areas involved, the probable functions of those areas, and how they are interconnected. fMRI studies with children (the method is safe, the main challenge being to keep the child from fidgeting) have yielded good evidence about how the circuits normally develop and anomalies that occur in developmental dyslexia. However, the brain is a tough nut. Although the major components have been identified, a detailed understanding of the system is not yet in hand. The fact that we still do not fully understand the functions of major brain structures identified in the nineteenth century is a sharp reminder of just how complex the brain is and how difficult to unpack.
