Chapter 13
Renegades
Nine days remain before the Festival of the Coming and the seasons change. Rajnor has four days left and two tribes to see. He flies towards Najeno and sees their colors approaching. It is early morning in the east of Nevés and the land comes to life. The morning dew and fog are just evaporating as he hovers over the trees. Rajnor sees smoke up ahead at the edge of the Najenoâs perimeter and decides to investigate. He makes his way to a field and sees the Taiwai and Najeno colors flying together in the wind. A vast crowd is just waking, beginning their dayâs errands. Tents and campfires stretch across the field, while the two tribes mingle together.
âWhy would the Najeno and Taiwai be camping at their perimeters?â Rajnor whispers to himself. He is cautious and decides to land. He tucks his wings in and walks slowly in the field. Heâs at a distance away from the camp and questions fill his mind. A rider on a horse leaves the camp and traveling towards him.
Rajnor becomes aware of the rider and stops walking. He waits for the rider, who quickly approaches.
The young man on his horse acknowledges Rajnor, who accepts his greeting. âAre you Rajnor?â the young man questions politely. Rajnor nods yes, while the young man continues. âFollow me. The elders have been expecting you . . . please, come.â He gallops back towards camp, while Rajnor takes flight and follows him.
Members of the crowd point at Rajnor, who is following the horseman through camp. They are intrigued and in reverence while Rajnorâs shadow covers them. They reach the center of the camp and three men stand up anticipating his arrival. Rasnish is with two elders and wears a smile when seeing his old friend.
He greets Rajnor as he lands. âYouâve made it, my friend,â Rasnish shakes Rajnorâs massive hands. âIâve been filling our friends in about everything since the Living Pools . . . It is good to see you safe.â
âYour journeys have been kind to you, I see, Rasnish,â Rajnor states, while the two other leaders introduce themselves.
âI am Zanthos, elder of Taiwai. It is an honor to meet the mighty Rajnor.â He bows and sits down.
âI am Vicker, elder of Najeno. Itâs good to meet you.â They all bow to each other and sit around a fire.
âCan we please see the Hope Stone? Rasnish has informed us of this wonder, and weâd like to see it,â Zanthos asks. Rajnor smiles at Rasnish, then pulls out the Hope Stone from his armor. It glows as he tosses it to Zanthos. The elders and the growing crowd forming around them stare in amazement, bewildered at the glowing stone shining bright in Zanthosâ hands.
The crowd yells out a hundred questions at once. Astonished and in reverence of Rajnor and the Hope Stone, they assemble around them, curious and intrigued.
âSettle, please. . . . Settle down, please.â Vicker tries to ease the crowdâs curiosity. The young ones come closer to Rajnor and the leaders, drawn in by the Hope Stone.
