“Hey, is it cool if we go for a walk?” I asked the guard by the door. I knew I was allowed to come and go, but I wasn’t sure what everyone’s comfort level with Leto was.

“Are you packing?” he asked as if it was a question about the weather.

“Yeah.” I never went anywhere without something that would give me an edge if I needed it.

“Then you’re cool to walk.” He sat back down on the chair on the porch.

Leto ducked out from behind me and waited.

I looked around at the sprawling compound. The sheets of gray rock made a path that led to a parting of tall hedges. I headed in that direction.

Leto kept a few feet between us. We walked for a few minutes before he spoke, “You’ve got some tension back there.”

I shot him a look. “You’re an expert on us already?”

“No. Not even a little, but I’ve followed the legend of you ladies for a while. I researched some of the jobs they know you did. You’re tight. Like siblings who love each other tight.” He kicked a lone rock off the path. “And I’m like that with my dumbass brother.”

“We didn’t do half the jobs that are rumored to be ours.” I wasn’t keen on opening up to Leto just yet.

“Yeah. You ladies have a fingerprint. In and out. Clean. That last one was not clean.” He stuck his hands in his pockets, curving his massive shoulders inward.

“No, it wasn’t. It was messy. But we knew getting to Max would be. He’s so well guarded.” I stopped and took in what was beyond the hedges.

There was a huge pool, a fountain in the center. Every side had steps leading into it. There were massive statues and a few benches. I headed in the direction of the benches.

“Well, if it’s any consolation, my planned event went sideways, too.” He ruffled his hair and shot me a rueful glance.

“I bet it did. It was a classic screw-up.” I started picturing how our antics would come off in a retelling between others in the criminal world.

Leto’s face lit up. “Oh. Now you’re picturing it, right? The shrimp girl screaming her orgasms? The most inept group of fighting women turning the tables and just pantsing the entire operation? Yeah, I feel like a mastermind.”

“And now you’re technically kidnapped,” I added.

“Yup, I’m never working in this business again.” He gestured to the bench and I sat down.

He took a seat next to me. “You were worried about your brother and took on one of the toughest assignments ever. We don’t do our best work when family is involved.”

“Thanks. Tell that to everyone else. But thanks for getting Matt. Did I say that yet?” He turned to face me and he swept his gaze over my face and back to my eyes.

“You’re welcome.” I focused on the water in the pool. It glinted in tiny waves in the sun.

“You didn’t have to do that.” He put his hand over mine on the bench.
