the board fell into the grip of conservative, elderly trustees led by President Stephen Clark, the severe, humorless, black-clad heir to the Singer sewing machine and Clark thread fortunes. During the twenties, he had accumulated some of the choicest modern works of the previous decades, but he was frankly dubious about the more recent art which intrigued Barr. … He had also resisted the museum’s involvement with films, photography, and industrial design and served still as a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum, where the MoMA’s lively publicity and innovative exhibitions were viewed as unseemly pandering to the mob.

Some of Clark’s notions about proper displays of art must have struck Barr as distinctly tacky. In the late 1920s Clark had remodeled a gym on the top floor of his gray Gothic mansion on Seventieth Street between Madison and Park avenues as a Matisse room, with blue curtains, red-checked tablecloths, polka-dot pillows, and crockery imitating the paintings on the walls. When Clark proudly displayed this room to the artist in 1930, Matisse had been appalled.44
