Chapter 4

TO BE A KNITTER

“IT IS ALSO TRUE OF DEVOTED KNITTERS THAT THEY IMMEDIATELY FEEL A CONNECTION AND CAMARADERIE WHEN MEETING A FELLOW KNITTER. THERE IS A SENSE OF TRUST THAT OPENS A DOOR INTO CONVERSATION AND OFTEN LEADS TO DEEP, LONG-LASTING FRIENDSHIPS.”

—Nancy J. Thomas and liana Rabinowitz, A Passion for Knitting, 2002

As I sat hunched with intense concentration over the beginnings of a sleeve to a baby sweater, stitches barely clinging to the four size 1 double-point needles I held clumsily in my hands, I wondered about what it means to be a knitter. This was the third time I had tried to begin the sleeve, and I wasn’t about to rest until I had a few rows on the needles and the stitches were secure. Were all knitters this determined, this crazy for their craft? In my experience, the answer is yes. Knitters also tend to be creative, motivated, and, well, somewhat compulsive. Many of the knitters I know have more yarn stocked away at home than they’ll ever be able to knit in the next ten years. And they’ve got more than one unfinished object (affectionately known as UFOs) lurking in one or more dark corner of the house. If this sounds all too familiar, take heart. The essays collected in this chapter are proof that you’re not alone.
