See here for an explanation of super-bulky yarns.
yarn used
1 skein Madelinetosh ASAP in Courbet’s Green, Betty Draper Blue, or Cricket, 90 yd (82m), 4½ oz (127g), 100% superwash merino wool
sizes & measurements
BIG: 3" (7.5cm) wide, 10" (25.5cm) long or 3¼" (8.5cm) tall in sitting position
BABY: 2½" (6.5cm) wide, 7½" (19cm) long or 2¾" (7cm) tall in sitting position
The big octopi’s bow ties are fabric cut to 14½" × 1½" (37cm × 3.8cm) and hemmed ¼" (6mm) all the way around. The baby’s tie is simply a raw-edged piece of fabric cut to 10" × ½" (25.5cm × 13mm). Ribbon or a piece of felt, or even a scrap of contrasting yarn, would work well, too.
note
Replace the buttons with French-Knot (see Appendix) eyes to make this sea buddy safe for infants.
1. Finger knit a two-finger strand until it measures approximately 2½ yd (2.3m) for the adult or 2 yd (1.8m) for the baby. Bind off.
2. Cut the strand into four 21" (53.5cm) pieces for the adult or four 17" (43cm) pieces for the baby. Refinish cut strand (see Cutting a Finger-Knit Strand) (A). Weave all ends into the strand and trim.
