Example sock: Knit 18 stitches.

Decrease by slip slip knit, then knit 1. Turn the work to the wrong side.

Slip 1 purlwise with the yarn in front, purl 5, purl 2 stitches together, purl 1.

Socks with different stitch counts may prescribe a different number of purl stitches on this row.

Continue to work short rows as follows:

Row 1 (Right Side): Slip 1 purlwise, knit to 1 stitch before the gap created in the previous row, slip slip knit, knit 1, turn.

Row 2 (Wrong Side): Slip 1 purlwise, purl to 1 stitch before the gap, purl 2 stitches together, purl 1, turn.

Repeat these 2 rows until all the stitches of the heel flap are worked, ending with the RS facing for next row. If not enough stitches remain to complete the purl 2 stitches together, purl 1 at the end of the last Wrong Side row, work as purl 2 stitches together.
