Tassels

Tassels are only marginally more difficult to create than fringe, and they can be joined to the ends of a scarf in the same manner. To create a tassel, the knitter needs a piece of cardboard as tall as the finished tassel will be. Before wrapping the yarn around the cardboard, the knitter cuts a length of yarn and lays it along the top of the cardboard piece. The yarn is then wrapped around the cardboard multiple times; no exact number is right or wrong, knitters can do more wraps for a thick tassel and less wraps for a thin tassel.

Once the yarn is around the cardboard, the knitter can cut the yarn, then remove the cardboard, holding the yarn with the piece that was resting on top. While holding this piece, the knitter wraps another length of yarn (about 6 inches long) around the top of the tassel, about ¼ to ½ of an inch from the top. This length of yarn should be wound around and secured in a knot; the ends can hang down as part of the tassel. The knitter then cuts the strands at the bottom so that they are individual, not loops. The yarn threaded through the top can be tied off and used to join the tassel to the scarf.
