- Provisional cast on.

A provisional cast lets you knit in two directions. When creating a provisional cast on use either cotton or acrylic yarn as the provisional yarn so that it does not felt into your work. First knot the two yarns together. Hold the two yarns like you were going to do a long tail cast on. The working yarn should be toward you and the provisional yarn away from you.

Slide the needle under the working yarn, up and under both yarns, and under the working yarn again forming a cast on stitch. The working yarn will form the cast on stitches while the provisional yarn will be carried under the cast on stitches. When you are ready to knit leave the provisional yarn alone and only work with the working yarn.

When you are ready to work on the provisional cast on slide the needle into all of the loops of the working yarn. Once they are all on your needle you can undo the knot and separate the two yarns. Gently pull the provisional yarn out of the cast on stitches being careful not to let any of the cast on stitches fall off of your needle. If they do very carefully slide them back onto your needle. Now you are ready to start knitting from the other direction of the original cast on.

Slide the needle under the working yarn and then up and under both yarns.

Catch the working yarn and pull the provisional yarn to the left to create a cast on stitch.

A completed provisional cast on

Notice how the provisional yarn is resting in the working yarn’s cast on stitches .

Begin by sliding the needle into the cast on loops and then gently removing the provisional yarn. Normally you would bind off the knitted project but I left the needle in to take this picture. If you’re not ready to bind off the thread a tapestry needle with contrasting yarn and thread it through the loops on the needle. Remove the needle and you can then work on your project and come back to this end and add more knitting.
