Choosing colours

When doing stranded knitting with two or three colours, it is relatively easy to change the colours to your preferred combination. There are a few things to keep in mind, however. I once knitted a cardigan in the Setesdal pattern using natural brown as the main colour and a traditional Faroe Island blue as the contrast colour. It looked nice while I knitted, but from a distance the blue disappeared and it looked bland. What had happened? When I was buying the yarn, I had held the two colours next to each other, and with equal amounts of both colours the contrast looked fine. However, with the main colour used in about 80 per cent of the cardigan and only a little of the contrast colour, the colours proved to be too alike in value, and the photo showed up grey without any visible pattern.

You can find out the value of colours by taking a black and white picture of them together. The value tells you how they look on a grey scale. When testing my cardigan, the brown and the blue turned out to have the same value. If you want to change the colours in a pattern, I recommend that you take a black and white picture of the yarn you want to use. If you can clearly distinguish the yarns by lighter and darker shades of grey, they should show up well in the finished design.
