Meniscal Flounce

In a population with asymptomatic knees, 0.2–0.3 % of them could show at the arthroscopy a common sign with a wave appearance of the free edge of the MM. This deformation is not a sign of tear. On coronal images, it may appear as truncated meniscus and mimic a radial tear (see lemma).

Meniscal Fraying

At arthroscopy, “fraying” is defined as surface irregularity along the meniscal free edge without an evident tear. At MR imaging, the free edge may appear with a loss of its sharp conical central edge; moreover, the posterior root ligaments may manifest thinner than usual, ill defined, and horizontally oriented with an increase of intrameniscal signal intensity contacting the articular surface. In our experience, improved in-plane resolution and thinner sections have resulted in MR imaging depiction of areas of meniscal fraying, which can involve the free edge of the body, the posterior horn, or the posterior root ligaments. However, doubtful cases still remain especially as regards LM instead of MM.
