CHAPTER 15

Maggie

After a lot of trouble, Maggie finally slipped in through the broken window and with a few steps she was over by Klara and Johan’s side. ”Good God, are you alive?”

Maggie, who had been a streetwalker in Copenhagen since she was fourteen, had at that time escaped from her abusive father. She had seen and experienced more than most. Life had been tough. She had repeatedly cried over friends who had succumbed to the streets. Maggie had done a lot for money, but she hadn’t sold her soul. Many a fine madam had probably looked down at Maggie, but few of them were as good-hearted as she was. Maggie figured that Roger and Chad had stolen something valuable in Oslo. She had agreed they could stay with her for a few days. Chad and Roger had therefore made the mistake of thinking that Maggie was like them and would do anything for money. However, leaving two children trapped in a burning house was the last thing in the world Maggie would let happen. So, she had waited around the corner and snuck back when Chad and Roger had left. She had been shocked when she saw smoke seeping out of the windows.

Klara received new strength as she heard Maggie’s voice. They weren’t going to die!

”Yes, we’re alive,” she coughed up, ”but it is urgent to get Johan out!”

Maggie tried to loosen the rope that held Klara bound, but the knots were too tight.

”Kitchen drawer, find a knife,” Klara said.

Maggie looked desperately through the drawers, but it was hard to see through all the smoke that filled the whole kitchen. She eventually found a pair of dull scissors. With all her might, she cut the thick rope that bound Klara to the radiator. Finally, she loosened it. Then they both tore and cut the rope that tied Johan using the blunt scissors. Johan was unconscious. When they finally got him loose, they dragged him toward the window. It wasn’t easy. Klara was nearly done for. Johan’s lifeless body was like a sack of potatoes.

On the way over to the broken window, Klara accidentally kicked the green binoculars. She knew how much they meant to Johan, so she mobilized enough strength to bend down and pick them up. When they were over by the window, they had no choice but to push Johan through it. So be it, if Johan got some nicks and cuts from the shards that were still on the windowsill. Out he must. It was life or death. They used all their effort to lift him up as high as they could and push him out. Klara and Maggie climbed one by one up on a chair and jumped after him. They both scraped their legs and hit the ground with a bang.
