1 Ajit’s different-sized feet (and therefore, shoes) were probably the most celebrated physical deformity in Bollywood (apart from Shah Rukh Khan’s stammer). In Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Ajit played Shaakaal—the goggled super-villain who thought nothing of killing painters who could paint his likeness for the police. But he never bargained for the painter’s three sons who would see his different-sized shoes and one of whom would grow up to be the He-est Man in Bollywood. Great music, super dialogue and a breathtaking pace… we almost forgot that there was a murderer.
2 It’s Ajit again, underlining how pervasive the Loin was as a villain in the 1970s.
In Zanjeer, he played Teja—the mobster who went to become the don and had to contend with honest police officers with a bad temper and great lines (written by the hottest scriptwriters of the country). The father who got killed was totally inconsequential in the greater scheme of things while the killer’s distinctive bracelet assumed a bigger role by haunting the son throughout his life.
3 Paresh Rawal’s gigantic toe gave him away.
In Baazi, he was the slimy Deputy CM Chaubey who was not beyond harbouring terrorists in his own home and molesting dancers he took a fancy to. He got chopped up by a Special Branch officer, who realised in the climax that Chaubey’s big toe was the same size as his father’s killer’s (who also made lewd propositions to his mother, for good measure). To know how that little boy saw the killer’s toe but not his face, you have to see the film.
4 It was Rahul Roy, who looked dangerously close to being naked in some scenes.
In Junoon, he was the ichhadhari tiger (which was such a welcome change after years of icchadhari nagins). As every little child with a very basic knowledge of biology knows, a human turns into a tiger every full-moon night if he is bitten by a cursed tiger. This was exactly what happened to him. The mild-mannered Rahul turned into a Big Cat, only to devour all those he did not like in his human avatar.
5 It was the Big B, in one of his earlier roles as a crazed lover.
In Parwana, he was an artist, Kumar Sen, who faced the double whammy of being rejected as suitor by his supposed girlfriend’s uncle while the girl fell in love with Navin Nischol. But he solved both these problems in one fell swoop when he murdered the uncle and framed his girlfriend’s lover for the crime. And he did this with extensive help from Indian Railways and Indian Airlines.
6 Premnath was the über-cool Good Samaritan who turned out nothing like he pretended to be.
In Teesri Manzil, he was Kunwar Sahab, the millionaire with a heart of gold who went all out to help the hero clear his name as a murder suspect. Not only that, he was the ever-smiling elder statesman who supported his romantic pursuits as well.
