Besides fennel, most Apiaceae plants don’t need much space in the garden but work well if planted in rows or blocks. All can be started by seed planted directly into the garden (many won’t transplant well) and will be planted in your kitchen garden early in the cool season. From thinning to harvesting, there’s a little more tending that goes into caring for your umbellifer plants. Once established, these plants can, mostly, care for themselves during the majority of their growing period. If you need a kitchen garden plant that grows over a few months requiring little more than water, the umbellifer family is one to meet.
