Colin checked that the disc from the machine at the corner where you paid to park was visible through his windshield and turned, looking down the street lined with shops, cafes, and pubs. The buildings on the main street of Cork city were three and four stories high—were there apartments above or did the shops own those spaces as well? Probably a mixture. People bustled down the sidewalks, tourists ambled, mouths ajar as they took in the sights. He smiled and tucked his hands into his pockets. Did he look like a tourist or someone who belonged?

The sign for the English Market caught his eye. Might as well grab a bite to eat before continuing his search for a place to play for a bit. None of the towns on the way to Cork from Blarney had netted him a gig, but surely there’d be something in the city proper. His spring break trip to Seattle and Pike’s Place Market flitted through his mind—though the Irish version was cleaner and more refined. Shop after shop lined the halls that branched off at angles, taking you deeper into the maze of stalls. The brick floor gave way to tile as Colin passed a chocolate shop and several poultry stalls. He wove through the light foot traffic, pausing to take a sample of boutique cheese made on the premises. As the salty tang spread over his taste buds, he made a note to come back and get a small block. That and a loaf of bread would do just fine for supper tonight, regardless of where he ended up.

A seafood stall boasting locally caught fish of more varieties than he’d ever seen in one place took up one entire hallway, ending in a sandwich shop on the corner. What was their definition of “local”? He paused to look at the signs and sighed. Kinsale. This whole case had been caught by fishermen in Kinsale just that morning. He’d been able to see the fishing boats from
