There is often much confusion and debate surrounding the issue of whether pathologically violent offenders are insane or sane when committing acts of perfidy, especially in cases concerning violent psychopathic, sociopathic and/or sadistic serial sexual offenders and/or serial killers. The confusion over which category to put them in exists because of the extremely violent nature of the crimes perpetrated by these offenders that are very difficult if not impossible for non-violent human beings to fathom. It is therefore understandable and even quite natural to deem everyone who commits crimes of this nature to be “not of sane mind.”

However, the fact is that it is possible for them to be both in a sense, as they can commit insane and sane actions simultaneously. Serial offenders such as these can blend into society, leading what we consider to be normal lives as in, they may have a family, a partner, children, they may be low-profile (working and living among us) or high profile such as a business mogul, politician, religious leader, actor, singer etc.

Geoffrey Epstein a “billionaire” and convicted sex offender, accused of multiple heinous crimes, who was believed to have used his wealth to create a façade to fund and hide his abusive activities which included the trafficking of women and minors on a large scale, with the express intention of sexual exploitation. These women (including adolescents and minors) were bought and sold explicitly for sexual purposes, they were manipulated and coerced into prostitution, psychologically brainwashed, and emotionally conditioned similar to the process of the indoctrination tactics used by a cult or sect.

They were emotionally, psychologically, and physically abused and intimidated into being pliant, compliant and to keep silent about their activities. Epstein created a public persona that engendered an appearance of an accomplished, charismatic, intelligent, philanthropic, and benevolent figure, to successfully camouflage his monstrous intentions and abuses. He is the epitome of the “high functioning” (refer to high functioning abusers p14) psychopathic, sociopathic, and narcissistic predator.

He and his cohorts exploited the unprotected and vulnerable without conscience, for their own personal financial gain and/or their sexual and possibly fetish or deviant driven gratification. He like all other predators and abusers was incapable of feeling empathy towards his victims, treating them as objects or possessions, while justifying and rationalising his actions. He created a business around the buying and selling of human beings as if were selling a product in a shop window, acting without conscience. These types of abusers, thrive on feeling powerful and omnipotent thinking they are not only above the law but also untouchable.

Let us look at two of America’s infamous serial rapist/killers who had committed multiple heinous crimes over long periods of time “Ted Bundy” and “The Golden State Killer,” we must ask the question how did they remain undetected for such a long period of time.
