Chapter 20

“Thad.” The movement of Isabel’s lips against his and the vibrations as she murmured his name only spurred him to kiss her harder. Hands down, these were the most amazing lips he had kissed. Ever. “Thad!”

Her hand pushed insistently against his pecs. “Hmm?” He kept kissing. Couldn’t stop. Couldn’t stop massaging her arms and shoulders as he went. Or trailing his fingers along her spine. He would almost swear the taste of his blood lingered in her mouth, and damned if that wasn’t kind of sexy in a weird, kinky sort of way.

“Thad, stop. Please.” She wedged her arms between his, breaking their embrace. “We need to talk.” Those were words to pound a spike of cold, splintering fear into the center of any male’s chest, even on a good day.

Thad growled as he stepped back—but only a scant few inches. He could still smell the clean, damp scent of Isabel’s hair when he dipped his head to her ear.

“I’ve been doing a whole lot of talking,” he whispered. “You’re the one who’s not saying much.”

The need to touch her bordered on compulsive. Painful, almost. He leaned his weight against the table and crossed his arms over his chest, locking them firmly to protect against the urge to reach for a silky strand of hair or to brush against her cheek. How could she deny the connection between them? They had shared something special when they’d made love. Something meaningful. Rage mixed with agony mixed with confusion, and his face hurt from the effort of keeping it from contorting so the emotions were obvious.

“So go ahead, Isabel. Talk.”

The strong breath she blew out ruffled her hair a bit. Long fingers rubbed at her tired eyes. He could hazard a guess as to what she was working up to, and he didn’t want to hear it.

“Thad, I can’t do this.” She gestured back and forth between them. “Whatever it is that’s going on here.”

There it was. His insides boiled. He couldn’t bite back what flew from his mouth next. His fangs crowded the inside of his mouth, and he just had to open the damn thing.

“And what exactly is going on here, Isabel? I’m still trying to figure that one out myself.” His fists clenched and released. “Aside from you running hot and cold on me.”

Isabel’s raised her hands in front of her chest, palms forward. It was hard to tell whether it was a gesture of surrender or if she was warding off an attack.

“Look, I’m sorry. I really am. But to be honest with you, things are getting way too weird for me here. In the last few days I’ve had my life turned upside-down. My best friend has been attacked by something I’ve only heard about in stories, and I somehow get hurtled through space by your sister. Then we fuck and suddenly I’ve got a power? How do you expect me to handle all of that? I’d be a candidate for the loony bin if I wasn’t freaking out right now.
