“You’re in an even worse mood than usual,” Dan observed as he sat opposite Adam.

Dan was right, but Adam had a sleepless night. He didn’t sleep well anyway, because it was uncomfortable with his leg and hip, but last night it was worse. He could only blame it on Nicky’s visit. It was her face flashing before his eyes preventing him from sleeping.

He looked up at the man who was now arranging the chess pieces as if he wasn’t interested in Adam’s answer. Adam knew it wasn’t so. Dan was a damn good therapist, but he hadn’t told Dan about Nicky yet. Nobody, except Nicky, knew what transpired the night of the accident.

He left that night because of his own guilt for what he had done to both Nicky and Manda.

And now he was confused. When he had thought he had lost Nicky for good, it had hit him hard. Much harder than losing Manda. Now he wondered if his sacrifice had been worth it.

But then… Adam wasn’t the man he was before the accident. He might never be the same. He couldn't imagine tying a woman like Nicky to a man who might never walk again without aid.

If that wasn’t enough, he had another shock this morning. When he had looked up from his book to see Manda’s parents, Adam couldn’t hide his unease. He hadn’t seen them for two years, but their words still echoed in his mind. It had stayed with him, reminding him, but what they told him that morning changed everything.

It might be time to confide in Dan.

“You’re right. I am,” Adam admitted.

“So what brought that on?” Dan asked while waiting for Adam to make his first move.

Adam didn’t have to think about it and made his move. When he sat back, he told Dan, “I had visitors.”

“Do you want me to drag it out of you?” Dan urged as he made his move.

Adam grimaced, shaking his head, “No, you don’t have to. Manda’s folks came to see me this morning.”

Dan didn’t have to prompt as Adam kept on talking. The chess game was long forgotten as Adam told Dan about Manda and what her parents told him today.

There was one piece of information he still had to share, though, so he looked up at Dan. “I’ve made a stupid decision,” he admitted for the first time.

Dan raised his eyebrow in question. Without knowing it, his voice softened as he told Dan about Nicky and the accident.

“She was so angry with me, and all I could think of was that she was so beautiful and that I had no right to think about it. I had accepted I messed up when she never came to visit me in hospital. She said then she couldn’t work with me and threatened to resign. As nobody had mentioned her, I thought she had. I don’t know why she came now.”

“Why didn’t you ask any of the family?” Dan asked.

“Because they might realise how I felt about her.
