âYouâre in an even worse mood than usual,â Dan observed as he sat opposite Adam.
Dan was right, but Adam had a sleepless night. He didnât sleep well anyway, because it was uncomfortable with his leg and hip, but last night it was worse. He could only blame it on Nickyâs visit. It was her face flashing before his eyes preventing him from sleeping.
He looked up at the man who was now arranging the chess pieces as if he wasnât interested in Adamâs answer. Adam knew it wasnât so. Dan was a damn good therapist, but he hadnât told Dan about Nicky yet. Nobody, except Nicky, knew what transpired the night of the accident.
He left that night because of his own guilt for what he had done to both Nicky and Manda.
And now he was confused. When he had thought he had lost Nicky for good, it had hit him hard. Much harder than losing Manda. Now he wondered if his sacrifice had been worth it.
But then⦠Adam wasnât the man he was before the accident. He might never be the same. He couldn't imagine tying a woman like Nicky to a man who might never walk again without aid.
If that wasnât enough, he had another shock this morning. When he had looked up from his book to see Mandaâs parents, Adam couldnât hide his unease. He hadnât seen them for two years, but their words still echoed in his mind. It had stayed with him, reminding him, but what they told him that morning changed everything.
It might be time to confide in Dan.
âYouâre right. I am,â Adam admitted.
âSo what brought that on?â Dan asked while waiting for Adam to make his first move.
Adam didnât have to think about it and made his move. When he sat back, he told Dan, âI had visitors.â
âDo you want me to drag it out of you?â Dan urged as he made his move.
Adam grimaced, shaking his head, âNo, you donât have to. Mandaâs folks came to see me this morning.â
Dan didnât have to prompt as Adam kept on talking. The chess game was long forgotten as Adam told Dan about Manda and what her parents told him today.
There was one piece of information he still had to share, though, so he looked up at Dan. âIâve made a stupid decision,â he admitted for the first time.
Dan raised his eyebrow in question. Without knowing it, his voice softened as he told Dan about Nicky and the accident.
âShe was so angry with me, and all I could think of was that she was so beautiful and that I had no right to think about it. I had accepted I messed up when she never came to visit me in hospital. She said then she couldnât work with me and threatened to resign. As nobody had mentioned her, I thought she had. I donât know why she came now.â
âWhy didnât you ask any of the family?â Dan asked.
âBecause they might realise how I felt about her.
