Yet another Bigfoot found footage movie. The Blair Witch Project, still the template for the form, was inspired by pioneering 1972 Bigfoot film The Legend of Boggy Creek, so it’s only natural multiple coat tail-riders should send documentarians wandering into woods in search of Bigfoot and getting Sasquatched. The twist here, if it is a twist, is that protagonist Mark (writer-director Mark Bacci) and sometimes-reluctant partner Rebecca (Rebecca Davis) set out to make an exploitative hoax documentary (Mark airily admits you don’t even need to show a monster on screen to get noticed) only to run into the real thing. This means much of the running time is taken up with squabbles as Mark directs an increasingly annoyed Rebecca as she reacts to various hoked-up signs of Bigfoot activity. As usual, the early stages include encounters with supposed experts (all with plaster-casts of Bigfoot tracks) and an ominous bearded local who warns the outsiders away. The backstory involves the killing of a hiker and the disappearance of his wife, suggesting a parallel with the superior Willow Creek, which isn’t carried through since the creature (a briefly glimpsed monster suit which resembles Trog) is more interested in killing interlopers than snatching a potential bride-of-Bigfoot. A frame story involves a friend of the vanished couple (Aliyah O’Brien) confronted with the recovered footage – and a recorded phone call from the hysterical Rebecca – and shruggingly admitting she doesn’t know what to make of it all. The woods look nice, the people are grating and the monster works better when barely seen. Utterly generic.
