1. Create Safety

This is a repeat of the first step in what to do following an immediate trauma; however, this is more about preparing the environment. When first meeting a student, I want you to choose one or two people on staff who will work to become their “person.” It’s who will meet them at the door every morning if possible, and who they can lean on when things get tough. I have heard often that children should not get too attached to one person, so there is a tendency to change their person often. This is a harmful practice. Creating a safe and secure relationship with one person at a time is most effective with kids who have a trauma history. In fact, it’s crucial.

I appreciate the challenge you have when students arrive in your schools or on your buses and you have virtually no background information on them. Whenever possible, it’s so helpful if you know something about their story, like a sport they play or a video game they like. This knowledge can give you a powerful opener.
