Deadly Game
“Mrs. Williams?” I called, staring at the door two inches in front of my face. “Is something wrong?” Why had she slammed the door on me?
“You get out of here!” the old lady yelled from inside. “I’m calling Security!”
Her voice was frightened, and I felt bad. I hadn’t meant to upset the poor woman. But I honestly had no idea what had set her off “I’m sorry to bother you,” I called, trying to sound as friendly as possible. “I need your help to find my brother. He’s missing.”
She didn’t answer. I hoped that meant she was listening.
“I got your address from Kathy Boutry. Did she come to see you, Mrs. Williams?” I went on. “Can you tell me what you talked to Kathy about?”
“Security is on the way,” Edna called back. “You leave now!”
“Okay, I’m going,” I told her. I grabbed the complaint list from my pocket, ripped off a corner of one page, and quickly wrote my name and my cell number. “But please call me if you change your mind.” I shoved the paper under her door. “Please, Mrs. Williams.”
Edna didn’t say anything, and I could hear heavy footsteps running up the steps. I headed toward them. The last thing I wanted to do was get in a fight with the security guards. I met the two middle-aged guys at the top of the stairs. “I’m the one you want,” I told them. “I was talking to Edna Williams.”
The guys exchanged confused looks. I guess they weren’t used to people turning themselves in.
“You’ll have to leave now,” the first guard said. “We’ll escort you out.”
“Okay.” I started downstairs with them on my heels.
“What kind of jerk upsets an old lady like that?” the other guard muttered, loud enough for me to hear.
“That’s exactly what I’m wondering,” I told him. We’d reached the ground floor. “I’ll see myself out.”
The guards followed me to the front door and watched me until I made it over to my motorcycle. I stopped there and gazed back up at the retirement home. What kind of jerk had gotten Edna so upset? It wasn’t me. She had freaked out when I mentioned the Olde Tyme. Why?
I looked down at the list of complaints in my hand. Kathy had written one other address. This one was next to the name Milton Lanning. “Okay, Milton Lanning,” I said, pulling on my helmet. “Let’s hope you’re a little more helpful.”
When I entered Milton’s address into my onboard computer, the GPS balked. It couldn’t give me specific directions to the place—it could only put me at the nearest crossroads.
Weird, I thought. But when I reached the crossroads, I could understand why the computer was baffled. This place was in the middle of nowhere! There were trees on all sides, and just a little one-lane road winding through them. It was pretty, but lonely.
I checked the address on the paper, then looked around. There wasn’t a house—or even a building—to be seen. I wondered if Kathy ever managed to find this guy.
