THE COLLEGE OF MYSTICAL BEINGS

KELCIE AND NIALL jumped out of the Sidral in Summer City together. Giving him a ride wasn’t a big deal, but it was nice to be able to do something for him for a change. He’d done so much for her last year, all through school. She’d forgotten about that with all the angst during break, and that was unfair of her.

The tree unzipped again. Expecting Brona and Zephyr, Niall groaned inpatiently when Tad Fagan exited. The Charger glowered at Kelcie, then at Niall, and stomped off shaking his head, to the back of the long line waiting to pass through security to get into Summer City.

“What is taking them so long?” Niall huffed.

Kelcie was anxious too. Ever since Lexis got away with Niall’s bough, it felt like an hourglass turned over, and the sands were falling away ten granules at a time. Lexis had been at the Academy for months, waiting to strike at the right moment, the day before the Ascension, but how was that relevant to Winter? And what, if anything, did this have to do with the foreshadowing Kelcie’s and Brona’s mothers had showed them? Lexis was ten steps ahead, and had been for a long while. Every second counted, every grain of sand mattered, and Brona and Zephyr still weren’t here.

Brona was probably trapped in the Sidral, being strangled to death by too many quiver straps. She was loaded down with three when Kelcie left and trying to add a fourth.

As they waited, Kelcie noted how the new twin swords on her back were heavier than they did yesterday, as if they somehow felt the weight of the task ahead. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes, soaking up the noonday sun. How could a place packed with this much warmth and sunshine suddenly grow abysmally cold and blindingly dark?

“We don’t have time to wait,” Niall fretted. “We have to get to the College of Mystical Beings as soon as possible! Let’s get a place in line.”

Niall believed that the Chief Druid at the College of Mystical Beings would have answers for them about the omen, or could point them in the right direction. At least it was a place to start.

Before they left, Coach Blackwell unlocked the Nether Tower for them to load up on supplies. While Brona secured jinxes to her arrows, Zephyr grabbed a shillelagh and sharpened his sword. Niall overloaded his jinx pouch and oiled the wheel on his sidewinder, both of which presently bulged under his green Adder cloak. Kelcie had only brought her obsidian swords and her father’s bracelets because they were her most prized possessions besides the bough her mother gave her.

The duffel bag slung over her shoulder was light, with only a change of clothing for tomorrow. Ahead she could see classmates struggling with multiple suitcases and garment bags as if they were staying for a week rather than a single night. They were lucky. The ball was the only thing on their minds.
