Before You Go

Preview your destination via phone call, websites, and other online resources whenever possible to ascertain:

Facilities available on-site. Not all locations offer the same amenities. It is a good idea to have an idea of what you can expect in terms of food and meals, meetings and programming space, and educational and interactive offerings.

ADA-compatible and accessible accommodations for you and/or a companion. It cannot be assumed that they do or do not have necessary accommodations. Determining what will be a good fit prior to going will enhance your enjoyment and time spent there. (See birdability.org for more info.)

Bathroom availability and type based on your personal and companions’ needs. For example, some locations offer larger bathrooms for families.

Parking availability and location to your destination.

Terrain of trails and paths. Some locations may be deceiving in terms of level of difficulty and accessibility.

Rest stops and benches/seating options. Consider your needs based on the estimated time to travel a trail or outing. Consider adding additional time based on your capabilities. Knowing where you can safely rest can be helpful.

Cell phone service. Take along your phone in case you need to call for help. If possible, check in at the ranger station, bulletin board, or other means to let others know your bird outing plans, particularly when out alone.

Weather conditions. Consider your health needs and capabilities in different elements and dress accordingly.
