Chapter 8

Emerging Abyss

The year 1953 was very ominous for Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from the crisis involving Sheikh Abdullah, there was a new crisis brewing with respect to the Chinese. Claude Arpi, a China expert accessed a declassified CIA note dated 15 July 1953,1 which dealt with the Chinese communist troops in west Tibet and contained a detailed investigation of the planned road construction from Sinkiang to Tibet and Ladakh. It reported that in 1952, the 2 Cavalry Regiment, commanded by Han Tse-min, had its headquarters at Gartok, the main trade centre in western Tibet. The report noted that the regiment had 800 camels and 150 men garrisoned at Rutok, near the Pangong Lake that Tibet shared with Ladakh.
