Chapter 8

Just exactly how will we get out of this one?” asked Abnermal when he and the others regained consciousness. He fired a freeze--blast at the thick steel bars of the cell door. A thin coating of ice covered the door, then quickly melted. “A freeze--proof cell. I should have known.”

“Here, let me try,” said Garzooka. “Odious, give me a hand.” Odious jumped up and began to applaud, nodding and slobbering as if Garzooka had just finished performing a hit song.

“I meant help me with the door.” Garzooka pointed at the reinforced steel door that kept them captive. “I think together we can rip this sucker right off its hinges.” Garzooka and Odious each got a firm grip on the door. “On three,” said Garzooka. “One, two --”

“Let go of the door or the teddy bear is history!” shouted one of the armed guard dogs that K--Niner had left in charge.

Garzooka peered out of the cell, and he saw five canine guards holding huge laser weapons. He held tightly to the door. He didn't budge.

“Go tell the others to blast that brainy teddy bear into a million fuzzy pieces,” ordered the guard who had shouted the first order. Several other guards started to move away.

Garzooka had no choice. The guard had called his bluff. “No! Wait!” he shouted, releasing his grip on the door. “You win. Just don't hurt Compooky.”

“What about the mutt?” asked the guard, seeing that Odious still held tightly to the cell door, clueless about the threat to Compooky's life.

“Odious, let go of the door!” ordered Garzooka.

Odious didn't budge. Once again he was clueless. Garzooka turned to Abnermal. “Some help here, Abnermal?” he asked.

“Come on, Odious, let go of the door!” coaxed Abnermal.

“I meant a little help from your freeze--power,” said Garzooka impatiently.

“Well, why didn't you say so?” shot back Abnermal, his super--feline pester--power really getting under Garzooka's skin. “You know, sometimes you can be--”

“Just do it!” screamed Garzooka.

“Okay! Okay!” whined Abnermal. “What a grouch!” Abnermal fired a freeze--blast at the door again. A thin layer of slick ice coated the door. Odious lost his grip and slipped off with a thud.

Then Starlena stepped to the door and unleashed a powerful burst of singing that echoed throughout the prison hallways.

“My siren song should take care of those guards, Garzooka,” said Starlena. “That'll give you another shot at ripping open the door.” Odious and Abermal plugged their ears. (Garzooka was immune to Starlena's siren song.) Then Starlena stepped to the door and unleashed a powerful burst of singing that echoed throughout the prison hallways.

The guards went about their patrolling as if nothing had happened. “Heavy--duty earplugs again!” snarled Starlena, upset that her song had no effect. She turned to Garzooka. “I can't use my siren song, Abnermal can't use his freeze--power, and you can't bust us out of here or the guards will hurt Compooky, wherever he is! I hate to admit it, but Pet Force is paralyzed!”

The hours dragged on. Day slipped into night, and Pet Force grew more and more frustrated.
