The boxes are all packed, full to the brim with Mom’s clothes and most treasured belongings, and the movers will be here first thing in the morning. Getting that part ready was easy compared to what’s coming next.

Thomas sends me his last text of the day as I’m getting ready for bed: I’m dreading tomorrow.

I reply: Me too.

We’ve been plotting for days how to get Mom out of her forever home and into her new apartment with the least amount of trauma. We want to avoid having to literally carry our frail-but-feisty eighty-nine-year-old mom out of the house and into the car and down the road and into Maplewood Pointe and up the elevator and down the hall to her new home—all while she’s kicking and screaming. We’re not overthinking things; after seeing what I’ve seen, I know this is a real possibility. So we can’t just wing it. We need to be prepared to do whatever’s needed to get Mom safely from over here to over there. Josh and I faced a similar conundrum back when we needed to get Joey from India all the way to the United States for the help he needed:
