Driven to Distraction

There is another dynamic happening that contributes to loneliness―the explosion and abundance of technology―the way we connect, communicate and entertain ourselves. Advances in technology, have in one sense been very helpful, but the more we’re driven to connect through computers and iPhones, we lose a sense of personal understanding, of our need for each other and for real, genuine human connection. These distractions have increasingly created superficial connections with each other and ultimately with the Divine.

Many of us have become obsessed with different media forms. We say we are only going to watch thirty minutes of TV or be on the Internet for fifteen minutes, and the next thing we know, two hours have passed. I can remember thirty years ago hearing that because of technology we would experience more productive use of our time, and actually have an abundance of free time. The opposite seems true now. People are working harder, for longer hours and spending more time commuting, with little time or energy to relax and enjoy. Our work standards are geared to getting ahead professionally and keeping our employer and the stockholders happy. This creates greater employee dissatisfaction and burnout, causing people to have less time, energy and motivation to interact with each other. Sadly and unfortunately, technology and the need for speedy customer service, etc., has put some out of business, especially small family business.

Recent studies tell us that our iPhones, computers and video games are subtle yet dangerous obsessions, leading to addictions for some adults and especially for our youth. Studies show that when people’s iPhone or computers are taken away for three or four days, many of the subjects had withdrawal symptoms similar to someone who has a gambling or drug addiction. Without the use of the phone or Internet, the subjects became anxious, easily agitated and depressed. Many people obsessed with cell phone or Internet use are doing so to escape loneliness and boredom. Yet, it’s making them more isolated and spiritually empty. The rate of auto accidents due to cell phone use while driving has increased to such an alarming rate, most states have made it illegal to text or talk using a cell held phone. We are becoming slaves to our created technology and social media. Some experts on technology and intelligence are warning us now on the dangers of artificial intelligence. If we are not mindful, some of our man-made technologies could end up controlling—even destroying humanity.

Our minds naturally wander; we experience many distractions as part of being human. However, with the over stimulation brought on by technology, our minds are drifting more frequently, so we become even more distracted. The mind directs the body to go and go, so we do and do, in order to have more and more. In this accelerated pace of going, doing and having, are we really happy and fulfilled? We tend to be more worn out, distracted, impatient and unhappy. All this seems to be causing us to be more driven,
