L ater that day, Jane could hear Oscar pottering around in Catherine’s kitchen as she made her way up the road. She’d spent the rest of the afternoon forcing the thought that she knew Carter from somewhere out of her head and had cracked on with work. After popping over to Lucie’s for a cup of tea, Oscar texted to say that he was home early from his business trip and was on his way over to make a curry.

As Jane stood by the door, she gazed down the street. The little row of mews and Darling had crawled into her bones and become home. It would be strange if she did go back to her old life, her old house. The life where she’d been so lonely and so deep down in a well of the humdrum of her beige existence that she hadn’t been able to see it. She wondered what would happen next in life, and that was the strangest and best thing of all; she loved the delicious mystery of not knowing what might occur. Would she end up with the QR code house? Would she use it as a little bolthole? What would happen to her and Oscar? Where was that going to go? All of it dancing around in her head, giving her life.

Before she’d put Operation Romancer into play, she’d known all the answers to everything; what days she’d be working, what things would be arriving in the post from her online shopping habit, what tube she would get on in the morning, what new thing was coming to Netflix, what her day would entail.

Now she didn’t really know what was around the corner. It felt all sorts of good. The only thing she didn’t like about her new, not-quite-as-small life was Carter. He was the proverbial fly in the ointment in her new larger than life existence. But she was more than capable of dealing with someone like him. Wasn’t she?

As she bustled in the door, she checked her reflection in the mirror; the work week was showing. There was tiredness under her eyes, but as she pulled her chin down to stretch the skin at the sides of her cheeks, she could see what her friends had been telling her since the night she’d met Oscar and put her plan in place. She looked different. Was what was looking back at her Happy Jane? Happy Jane with a bit of work tiredness underneath. A person who hadn’t been out to play for a very long time and was now running around as free as a bird.

The house smelt of spices and the promise of a night in doing nothing with Oscar as she took her cardigan off and hung it by the front door. As she kissed Oscar, it went through her mind what Beccy had said about having to get herself ready for Carter getting home. The way she felt now after a busy week, it felt all upside down
