Chapter Twenty-Three

Landon

I stood behind the recliner, my hands on the back, poised to throw the chair at Crosby.

His eyes were huge and his lip snarled up high.

“Get over here and face me like a man,” Crosby growled.

“You’re going to make a mistake here, Crosby. I’m trying to help you.”

“Can we just calm down for a second?” Evelyn asked. “I can explain what-”

“What is there to explain?” Crosby yelled. “I walk in the door to find this?” Crosby looked back at Olivia. “And you just play it off as cool?”

“Crosby, just listen to-”

“I’m not listening to anyone!” Crosby yelled, cutting off Olivia.

“You’re thinking stuff that didn’t happen,” I said. “You’re making things up.”

“I’m going to make your face look messed up,” Crosby said.

“Dude, you can’t even talk shit the right way now,” I said.

“How can I? I walk in to find you shirtless and my wife naked!”

“She’s not naked, and I have a t-shirt on,” I said. “She’s wearing my flannel.”

As I said it, I knew that would only make Crosby more angry.

He lunged for the chair and jumped on it.

I walked away from the recliner as it fell back.

Crosby caught himself with his hands against the window frame.

He jumped off the chair and walked toward me.

“Crosby,” Evelyn said. “My back and legs were hurting.”

Crosby looked back. “From what?”

“He saved me,” Evelyn said. “I was in a bad position and he got me out of it.”

“I barely even touched her,” I said.

Again, Landon, really?

I wasn’t sure there was anything I could say in the moment that wasn’t going to come across wrong.

Crosby lunged for me again.

The door to the house opened and Cliff appeared.

Just in time to put his hands out and stop Crosby.

“What the hell is going on?” Cliff asked.

“You figure it out,” Crosby said. “I come home to find Landon wearing nothing but a t-shirt. And my wife wearing nothing but his flannel.”

Cliff looked at me.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

Cliff’s cheeks blushed a little.

“Yeah, you get it now,” Crosby said.

“You’re all wrong here,” I said.

“First you kill someone and then you mess up my cousin’s life. Now you’re trying to come after my life?”

That’s when I went after Crosby.

“Don’t ever say that again,” I roared as I jumped for him.

“Landon, stop!” Olivia yelled.

“The both of you stop,” Cliff ordered.

Crosby and I both nudged Cliff out of the way.

We were inches apart and grabbed for each other’s shirts.

I really didn’t want to hit the guy.

He was just protecting his wife. Which I respected.

Hell, under the same circumstances I would feel the same way.

It kind of looked bad.

Evelyn literally wore nothing but my flannel shirt.

And I stood in a t-shirt that clung way too tight to my body.

And Crosby was a hotheaded Justa guy. He was protective and secretly jealous. He knew I was bigger, stronger and had an edgier past than he did. And he didn’t like that at all.

Plus, he assumed I was a murderer.

So the thought of me alone with his wife scared him.

Finding me and her alone, her wearing my shirt, set him off even more.
