Chapter 28

Death from above

Red and Penn stood either side of Penn’s splayed raincoat like a couple of teenagers at a makeshift disco. Penn pinched her raincoat between thumb and forefinger (as though a venomous spider was hiding beneath it) and moved it away from the tambourine. Thankfully the ‘spider’ was gone. “It looks like she found us before we found her,” said Penn, reaching for her tambourine.

“But we survived. We survived the bus attack,” said Red.

“True. But what’s next?” As if in answer to Penn’s question, the tambourine began vibrating. Penn looked into it and her face contorted with horror.

“What now?” asked Red.

“… they’re trying to kill us again. Right now!”

“How? We’re safe in here, surely,” he said, looking up and down the empty corridor. “No, Red. Don’t you see? We’re not safe anywhere! …Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” she said, gazing into the tambourine.

In the skies over London, a plane carrying 200 passengers was on its final approach to Heathrow. The captain of the Boeing 737 was making his final checks for landing. He was about to flick a switch and lower the undercarriage when the plane swerved violently to its right. An emergency alarm sounded. The captain took hold of the wheel and attempted to bank the plane left. No response. The alarm leapt an octave. The plane banked sharply again; and the passengers screamed as the overhead lockers burst open and luggage rained down.

“We have to get out of here, Red! Now! A plane!”

“A plane?”

“Yes! A bloody great plane is headed right for us!” she said, glancing towards the ceiling. They ran back down the corridor towards the main lobby.

In the lobby, people were standing about, discussing the crashed bus. Penn screamed, “Everybody listen to me! There’s going to be another crash! A big one! You need to get out of this building! Now! If you stay here you‘ll all die!” People looked at Penn the way they’d always looked at her: like she was nuts. “Please!” she screamed again. “You must listen to me!”

Red said, “Penn, what about your dance? It has some kind of power … it gives you control, right?” It was as though Penn had been slapped. Not only by a possible solution, but by Red’s perception. “Yes, yes, of course … my dance …but it’s a plane, how ….”

“Penn, you have to try!” Penn began to dance, shimmying and twirling as though welcoming the Age of Aquarius. She looked through her tambourine and saw the captain struggling to turn the wheel of his plummeting jet. Penn focused her mind on making his wheel work; she concentrated, and danced …. The people who’d wondered if the strange girl might actually know something relaxed considerably. Slowly but surely, the wheel began to respond. The captain pulled up sharply and the engines groaned as the airliner levelled out, and then began to climb …

“Did it work? Is it safe?” asked Red, gazing up at the ceiling.

“It worked. But a plane full
