Did He Sacrifice Her?

So what exactly happened? A surface reading can quickly lead us to think this Judge sacrificed his daughter as a “burnt offering.” YIKES!

I think there is ample evidence that he did not sacrifice his daughter as a burnt offering. Something altogether different is taking place in this text.

One of the detestable practices of the Ammonites was child sacrifice to their god Chemosh. Jephthah directly challenged Chemosh, pointing to Yahweh as the greater god. Wouldn’t it be ironic for him to sacrifice to Yahweh in the same evil manner that the pagans sacrificed their god? Would the Hebrews celebrate victory over the Ammonites and Chemosh by then mimicking Ammonite ways?

Moreover, when Jephthah makes a vow to God, would he dare before the battle has even happened to provoke the Lord’s anger by promising to behave like wicked Ammonites? It seems a sure plan not to win the battle, to get God against you, would be to promise to worship Yahweh like Chemosh.
