Chapter 8
There are three types of people who will come into your life: people who will enter for a short moment in time, people who stay for some time and then leave, and people who stay with you for your entire life. Sometimes, we may not know which of these categories our friends or family may fall into, until more time has passed. Sometimes, we think someone is meant to stay and then they leave. Sometimes, people we only talked to for a short time years ago reappear in our life and stay forever. Try to find meaning in every relationship you have in life, whether they are good or bad.
Good relationships may bring us happiness, and the bad ones may bring us growth. Seeing that every relationship may have its purpose, will allow you to not to be consumed by them. As humans, we are creatures that instinctively desire to connect with others. No matter how much money we have, what we value most is having others around us. As we grow older, we do not remember how much money we made in our lives, but those we met along the way. What matters most is the bonds we formed, the ones we let go, and the people that passed away.
The desire for connection among human beings also requires knowing how to manage and handle those connections. Because just having a lot of friends does not mean you are happy. You could have thousands of people around you but come home feeling lonely and not understood. So many actors and celebrities experience this dilemma so often.
Part of the reason is that we do not take time to have these discussions with ourselves. We continue to hide our issues through our relationships, or even have relationships to make us seem happier. This only provides short-lived success. And when we do have discussions with ourselves, we are often too hard on ourselves and self-critical. Why are we so mean to ourselves when we are rarely that mean to others? If your friend came to you in a vulnerable position and asked for advice, most would try to empathize and listen.
But this is not the case when we have these same conversations with ourselves. The people we are mean to the most are not the ones we hate or despise. Rather, it is with thoughts about ourselves that we are the cruelest. Due to this, the inner voice that continues to speak within us gets locked away as time passes. This is because it has continuously been discredited and ignored. Have conversations within your mind as you would have with anyone else. In being compassionate to ourselves, we can live more compassionate lives.
You may notice in your own life there will be people who are conceited, angry, jealous, and hateful. These qualities do not usually emerge for no reason. Most of the time they emerge because the other person is hurting inside and are struggling to find a connection. Their internal insecurities come out through showing these negative qualities.
