DEFEATING THE KINGS OF WORRY

Attacking the Roots of Our Worries

Joshua 9–11

MEMORY VERSE

“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.”

(Joshua 10:25 NIV)

This week Joshua and the Israelites encounter a wave of new enemies. Until now the Israelites have battled one king and one army at a time. However, we’re about to see what happens when fear compels a group of Canaanite kings—who likely fought each other at times—to form an alliance against the Israelites.

In some ways, I appreciate how God gave Joshua and the Israelites a couple of one-on-one warm-up battles against Jericho and Ai before having them face multiple kings at once. Just as one king represents a certain level of power, a cohort of kings represents an exponential increase in power and capacity. Joshua might have been overwhelmed if he had not kept his heart and mind on God’s plans and promises.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed when many big issues crowd into your life all at once? Futhermore, do you ever feel that some of those issues do not get resolved before new issues pile on? (I have a feeling that you are nodding your head right now.) When I look at my Wheel of Worry (look back at page 33 for a refresher), there have been times in my life when multiple big worries took over my life.

But there’s hope! I love that the Bible is filled with stories of regular people like you and me who face off against situations and circumstances bigger than our ability to overcome. People like to say that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. I disagree with that statement. I believe that life regularly gives us more than we can handle so that we realize our need for God, who can handle it all! That’s why the definition of victory in this study is so meaningful. Victory is when we believe that God is with us and for us in every circumstance, real or imagined. Therefore, victory is grounded in God’s character, not in our capacity.

Is there an age-old worry that has overshadowed your life? Perhaps you’ve carried worries over abandonment, financial insecurity, or death of loved ones since your childhood. God can give you victory over even the oldest and deepest worries. Mark 10:27 tells us, “Humanly speaking it is impossible, but not with God. Everything is possible with God.” Perhaps you’ve heard Christians say the phrase “But God.” The word but is often used as an excuse, but when we put “But God” together, that combination becomes an explanation for the extraordinary. There will never be a king-sized worry or problem that can ever stand against “But God,” because the supernatural power that God used to raise Jesus from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20) is the same supernatural power that God uses to give you victory over whatever king-sized drama is going on in your life.
