“WHERE? WHERE?” I shout. “I DON’T SEE ANYTHING!”

But before anybody can answer, my eyes lock onto something looming up at us out of the black night.

But it’s not the Phantom. It’s a long, wide and very deep hole in the ground!

Seeing it now for himself, my uncle stomps on the brake pedal, the wheels skate over the wet grass with a moist fizz, and I prepare to crash headfirst into the first sand trap of my brief career as a private detective.

Chapter 11: Storming the Beach

Our golf cart soars silently through the air into what now feels like a bottomless pit.

My stomach has somehow jumped up into my neck.

I must say that as a kid who suffers from extreme symptoms of motion sickness, I have never been a big fan of amusement park roller coasters. If I’m on a ride called The Whiplash, Thunder Mountain, or Dead Man’s Drop, you don’t want to be the kid sitting directly in front of me. Trust me. Let’s just say you’d better be wearing a hat.

After what feels like a three-day weekend, we crash into the sand with such force that I am twirled like a rag doll. I bite my tongue after banging my chin on my knee. Or somebody’s knee.

At this point, our golf cart has what my teacher, Miss Piffle, calls forward momentum, which means the cart has more than enough speed and weight to plow across the bottom of the sand trap and up the steep wall on the opposite side. We’re traveling straight up the wall like the space shuttle during lift-off!

Unfortunately, we don’t have rocket boosters—just two chubby guys and a kid who’s ready to throw up. So the cart stops just as we clear the other side of the sand trap, tips backward, and drops back into the sand trap like a stone. We have traded in our forward momentum for an extra large helping of gravity.

No wonder they call it a trap!
