Gimmicks

“The gimmicks that we do, we don’t call them gimmicks because it’s part of us; we put a certain sound, like the sound of like planes going through it; that’s because we want the people to have such… you know, now that their ears are open for that feeling every sound.” NEW YORK, JANUARY 1968

“All those things are all in the mind. All those things that are coming out of us, like we do a lot of those things. Like there’s a certain thing on the last LP, on the last track, it’s called phasing. It makes us sound like planes are going through your membranes and chromosomes and all this. Well like, you know, a cat got that together accidentally and he turned it on to us like, ’cos that’s the sound we wanted and, you know, you hear the sound; but you hit a certain note, you say, well can we… well, you know, there’s something we want, it goes Ssshhhhwsshh, and we wanna make it sound like that, but we don’t want to use tapes of jet airplanes. We want to have the music itself warped.” NEW YORK, JANUARY 1968

“Like, sometimes we play through a Leslie speaker like, you know. And then sometimes you can put that on afterwards or put it on as you play it. It all depends. A lot of times we might play it, we might record with us three or might record as one instrument maybe, and then it’s building around there, or either, you know, do us three and then just keep it as three and then put the voices on it, or either sing, you know. There’s so many different ways. We don’t really have no set pattern actually.” NEW YORK, JANUARY 1968
