It is not wrong to say, I believe, that The Bible is the single most influential book presented to mankind on this earth. Whole civilizations have been founded on it; such is its power and significance in shaping thoughts and beliefs on a massive scale.

How is it, though, that such a book with seemingly ridiculous stories could ever have taken hold of the human logical thought process? We straight away are introduced to a talking snake, forbidden fruit and then the concept of sin.

It doesn’t stop there, because on it goes to tell us about a global flood that destroys the world of man that God created in the first place. Was His creation so faulty that He had to destroy them, the very work of His own hands and start over again? Then we move on to Sodom and Gomorrah and its degeneracy, causing God to obliterate it in fiery denunciation, levelling it to the lowest point on earth, apparently where the Dead Sea now sits (which I have been lucky enough to visit on three occasions. It is a truly amazing place).

Why oh why does The Bible seem to insult our intelligence with such incredible and unbelievable stories and accounts? Does it appear to be myths and fables as many attest?

Were the ten plagues of Egypt factual? Was there a talking donkey? Did Abraham, Isaac and Jacob exist? Was King David a real person, who as a boy slew and decapitated a giant? Did his subsequent son Solomon exist?

Many people, learned at that, say that all these accounts are fictitious and mere inventions of the Jewish race and, it would seem on the face of it, just fanciful stories, quite simply that there is not a shred of evidence in history to substantiate much or any of the accounts, which it has to be said is true, though an arguable fact.

There is no evidence of a Garden of Eden; there is no evidence of wanderings of a massive group of Jews coming out of Egypt and living forty years in the wilderness. Archaeologists have not uncovered a single fragment of evidence for the exodus and their alleged sojourn. Now when you consider that there were more than a million people roaming in the wilderness and being led by Moses, and that they were able to build a huge furnace to create a Golden Calf, you would think there would be even a slight trace of their desert wanderings. But instead we have zero evidence!

But does this absence of evidence validate evidence of absence? Well, no, not exactly. There is no evidence to refute the exodus, just as there is none to support it either, but that does not conclude that it never occurred. The Jewish nomads coming out of Egypt did not commit to written record of their plight, nor did the Egyptians commit to record of their humiliation at the hand of God and the Jews.
