BEST USE OF THIS BOOK MATERIAL: Start playing jazz tunes right away and use this book as a reference when you get stuck on a chord in a song. Use the voicing chart to find Position I II and III voicings for the chord you are stuck on and integrate the voicing you want to use into your arrangement.

3. Theory of Jazz Voicings

I think one of the problems that classical players have with jazz voicings is that they don’t make much sense to them. Since I learned jazz voicings first before ever looking at classical music, I think I can offer some explanation as to the theory of jazz voicings.

Jazz piano voicings are all about the most colorful chord sounds and the least amount of movement.
