Chapter Summary

In this chapter we began to apply fundamental harmonic and voice-leading principles to a larger ensemble, consisting of 5–6 horns + rhythm section. We saw that many of the basic rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, and structural principles presented in Chapters 6-11 apply equally well to the larger ensemble. Topics covered include standard voicing positions, integrating the brass and saxes, homophonic and polyphonic textures, and the reharmonization of approach tones.

Software Tip: When working in the piano sketch version of the following exercises, place the bottom notes of both the treble and bass clefs in Layer 2 in Finale (Voice 2 in Sibelius) so that the note stems of the bottom part in each staff point down. In Sibelius, if the stems of the notes in Voice 2 do not point down automatically, select them and press “X” to flip the stems down. Get into the habit of using this method whenever working with a piano reduction of a larger score, since it makes it much easier to read and understand. Use the Text Tool (Finale) or Create > Text (Sibelius) to indicate, to the left of each staff, which instruments are meant to be playing each line.
