Vamp

The vamp is a type of intro in which a musical idea is repeated several times before the main body of music. The idea is usually the first chord or two of the opening chorus or the chords supporting an important motive in the chorus. Occasionally, a fragment of the opening motive is included. The vamp is played in rhythms that are the same as or similar to those in the music’s first few measures. In a live performance, musicians can create impromptu introductions to musical selections by performing vamps. In an arrangement, the arranger may notate a vamp in the score and either (1) indicate a number of repetitions or (2) add the direction “open” so that the vamp is repeated indefinitely until the band director cues the beginning of the chart. Example 5–21 contains sample notated vamps.
