JUST AS NEW ZEALAND HAD never had such a young prime minister before, they’d also never had such a young couple representing them on the world stage. Gayford embraced his new, rather unconventional, role wholeheartedly. He demurred to Ardern in interviews, always being sure to note that he had the easy job and simply did what he could to support her at home. As he’d said in his post-interview email earlier that year, ‘It’s a pretty strange time for us both. I just want to be the best partner I can be, in the background, gently nudging her to the greatness I know she’s got inside her.’

At international events, Gayford would pose alongside the other spouses of world leaders, often the only man in the group. Just as Ardern stood out in the world leaders group photos, where the vast majority were older men, so too did Gayford stand out in the spouses photos. Because Neve was so young, and particularly when Ardern was still breastfeeding, Gayford attended a lot of events as a plus one. At the UN General Assembly, he and Neve turned heads walking through the halls of diplomacy. But perhaps Gayford’s most notable outing with Ardern was before Neve was born, in the halls of Buckingham Palace. As Ardern walked through the halls of the palace, pregnant, and wearing a traditional Māori cloak, a photographer took a candid shot of the couple. Ardern walked in the middle, a look of purpose on her face. Gayford strode by her side, just a little bit behind.
