Dating Fortune Cookie
Live well and the world will open its doors. Live poorly and the world will slam them in your face and go back to playing cards with its buddies.
Worst Date Ever
I had been trying online dating since I hadn’t had much luck in the real world dating pool. I had been having some pretty good luck. Lots of people read my profile and “Winked” at me, and I started emailing with a few of them. Eventually, I narrowed the field (if you can call three a field) down to this one guy who miraculously fit into all the things I was looking for in a guy, and I fit into all the things he was looking for (except that I’m blonde and he prefers brunettes) in a woman. We corresponded all the time and eventually moved to the phone and had an even bigger connection than online. I thought I had hit pay dirt. We talked about what kind of future we could have together and both got carried away with how perfect the whole thing was going. We decided to go out on a proper date, so when he showed up I was relieved that he looked like his photo on his profile. We went out for dinner, which started out great except that he was rude to our waiter—really rude to the point that I left an extra twenty-dollar bill under my plate for him. Then we went to the movies, but when we were in line for popcorn he was openly condescending about the guy working the concession stand, commenting loud enough so the guy could hear him about slow he was and that the theater must have hired the “challenged.” It was awful. I was so embarrassed, and when we got to the front of the line I apologized to the guy behind the counter, who explained that they were having a glitch with their cash registers. My date got pissed off at me for undermining him, then proceeded to bring it up over and over again during the movie using a tone that I haven’t heard since I got caught stealing in eighth grade. Then when we got “Shhh-ed” for his berating me he told them to “Mind their own f***ing business,” followed by a generalized sexual preference slur. It was mortifying. Here’s this guy who I thought was everything I wanted in a guy—had my whole checklist covered, something that has never happened for me before, and he was the worst guy I’ve ever met and shitty to every person that crossed his path. I hadn’t even thought to put “Not A Shitty Person” on the list because I assumed that would be a given, but apparently not. Needless to say, our date ended abruptly after that because I walked out of the theater in the dark and blocked him from my online profile and my mobile phone. As it turns out, my standards of what’s right for human behavior is much are more important than my deal breakers or wish lists.
