By carefully choosing words appropriate for your students’ abilities, this game can be played with a wide variety of classes and levels of students. It is best to use words for which students might know many meanings. For example the password enormous might be gotten from such clues as big, huge, large, great, bulky, hefty. Before playing the game you may wish to use a dictionary or thesaurus to create a list of possible words. If you write those words on cards, use large letters so students can easily see them. These cards can be saved and used year after year.

Family Feud (M, H)

Procedure

Randomly create two teams of five students.

Seat each team in their own row.

Have a randomly chosen player from each of those two teams come to the front of the room and stand on either side of a designated desk that has two inverted cups on it.

Give a statement like “Name five of the six New England states.”

Whoever taps the cup first gets to respond, along with his/her team.

Beginning with the “tapper,” each team member, in turn and without help from teammates, names a New England state.

Each team member is awarded one point for each correct answer.

After this turn is over, randomly create two more teams of five and randomly choose one player from each team to come to the front of the room. (Randomly creating new teams gives each student an equal chance of playing.)

Play continues as described above.

Score can be kept on a classroom list of students.

The three students that scores the most points are winners.
